Alternative Mark Making Processes
Students were introduced to Tony Ortega , Denver artist and taught his alternative Process methods for transferring original work , to laser copies and then using matt medium to transfer to an acrylic board. Below are the results of this new process.
BIG PORTRAITS.
AP students spent some time modeling and drawing each other. They worked with contour and gestural line. They worked large and on many different surfaces with a multitude of media. After they practiced, they selected either a portrait of a classmate or did a self portrait. the object was to work BIG. They had complete autonomy when they selected their media and background. The following are images of their efforts.
AP students looked at the work of Louise Despont and ART 21 featured artist and replicated her style by creating complex pencil designs on Graph paper with graphite, ink and white ink.

2018/19 AP Students paint with London artist, Christian Dore
https://www.christiandore.com/
BORN IN KENT, ENGLAND IN 1970 CHRISTIAN DORE SPENT MOST OF HIS CHILDHOOD LIVING ABROAD. AT THE AGE OF 13 HE RETURNED HOME TO SETTLE IN THE SMALL VILLAGE OF SHORNE IN KENT. AT 18 YEARS OF AGE HE WAS ACCEPTED INTO THE KENT INSTITUTE OF ART AND DESIGN BEFORE CONTINUING HIS EDUCATION AT THE PRESTIGIOUS BOURNE MOUTHE AND POOLE COLLEGE OF ART.HIS CAREER BEGAN AS A MOTION GRAPHIC ARTIST FOR THE BBC AS WELL AS MTV AND NICKELODEON. AFTER ACCEPTING A DESIGNERS POSITION IN COLORADO IT WAS THERE THAT HIS ARTWORK TRULY FLOURISHED. AFTER MOVING TO THE COLORADO FOOTHILLS IT WAS HERE THAT DORE’S WORK EVOLVED INTO THE WORK THAT IS OWNED IN PRIVATE COLLECTIONS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.DORE’S WORK EXPLORES THE IMPRESSIONS OF THE LUSH ENVIRONMENT AROUND HIM. HE TAKES THE EXPRESSIVE QUALITIES OF COLOR AND MIXES THEM WITH A SOMEWHAT WHIMSICAL NARRATIVE TO CAPTURE HIS FEELINGS. DORE’S FLURRY OF ABSTRACT FORMS ARE BY NO MEANS FRENETIC AND EACH PAINTING MANAGES TO CONVEY A SERENE MOMENT IN TIME, A TRANQUIL CALM. THE RELENTLESS BUILD UP OF TEXTURE IS INTENTIONAL TO CONVEY THAT OF SOUND AND MOVEMENT WHILST MESHING NATURE INTO HIS OWN DISTINCTIVE STYLE.
AP Students gave Oil Painting their first try!! We worked in the "Grisalle" method which translates to mean the gray! First students created a collage, next they did a loose drawing and began a first layer of values focusing only on the darks and gray areas.. at this point they do not add titanium white (which takes longer to dry) . The next layer adds whites and then primary colors, it is followed by the final layer which allows adding all colors to the piece. It is a long process, their enthusiasm waned as the project droned on, but in the end they were happy with the results and had a better understanding of the media.

AP Students spend a day painting with TADASHI HAYAKAWA
|
TADASHI HAYAKAWA internationally acclaimed Japanese Painter opened his studio on Wednesday, February 15th to our 2016-17 EHS AP Studio Art class. The students had the opportunity to paint with him all day. His knowledge and inspiration has an amazing effect on the young artists. Their resultant work shows tremendous intuition and visual growth. Tadashi a once very successful Graphic Designer abandoned his post 25 years ago to pursue his soul's real passion, painting. After the upheaval of a California bohemian life style Tadashi scaled down to the bare necessities, relocated to Colorado, keeping only what was needed for making art. And through a series of unplanned encounters quickly became a highly sought after artist for many a collector. Since then Tadashi has had great influence on the development of the Cultural Arts scene in Parker, CO. He houses his studio at the new PACE center in Parker. Tadashi can also be found in his Denver Arts District studio Artwork Network on Sante Fe and 9th. In May 2017 Japan will be honoring Tadashi with a month long show in Tokyo and tribute to his artistic contributions both to Japan and the United States.
Tadashi a humble spirit abundantly shares his experience and insights with students, artists and contemporaries. He is inspiring and motivating. The students were in awe at being in the presence of a true master. Below are the painting that the students created. |
2016-17 Gallery of AP Studio Work
One of AP's first projects this year was to create a piece of art that focuses on " Trompe'loeil, a style of art that literally translates to mean "Trick the Eye". It is a style base on creating the illusion that something is really coming off of the page.
Right on Tractors...
One summer I went on a family trip and visited relatives that have an organic farm in Illinois. Like all farms there were lots of cool things to see, but I was particularly fascinated with the tractors. I zoomed in and took photos of there parts and insides! I printed the images and then cut them up and gave them to my AP students to draw. Most of them chose prisma-colored pencils. Below are the results...pretty cool for some rusty old tractors!
Freaky Friday- Batik Glue Drawings
2015-16 AP Studs are.... Figuring it Out!
AP studio students were visited by EHS Alumni class of 2011, Scott Murphy. Scott an amazing figure/Comic artist demonstrated how to draw the Figure. Students teamed up and practiced drawing each other through gesture, contour and longer poses. Eventually they chose a final pose and composed a portrait of their peer and put them in an environment. While the process was long it was well worth it. Below are the results of the student's hard work.
The students were asked to read an article written by Dave Dibble an artist/ animator at BLUE SKY (responsible for Ice Age, EPIC, & The Peanuts MOVIE After the Ap artists finished their figural compositions, they were asked to write a letter to a younger art student detailing and reflecting on their process and progress. In other words what advice to you have for a younger art student, share your words of new found wisdom. |

AP Studio- FREAKY FRIDAY- During the school year every other Friday our class does a " Freaky Friday" during this day we play with unusual art materials, quick projects and unplanned responses to artistic prompts. Students are freed of the rules and boundaries of other assignments and so during these break outs we all grow artistically through the lack of restraint or worry about the results. The images below are created with a layer of ceramic wax, then students added acrylic paint, after which they began to scratch & scrape out their chosen images. The work is fresh, not contrived and allows AP students to add new and innovative work to their portfolios. Enjoy!
