2019/20 Draw/ Paint 3 Student work
Memory Muse Ponderings. Draw/Paint 3 students were asked to contemplate what HOME meant to them. In their imaginings they were asked to grab onto a memory that had great significance to them and their life. We worked in our sketchbooks with Robert Frost's poetry and they practiced grabbing visual images through the written word. They examined symbols, visual mood and composition. Then they were asked to write their own personal reflection about their pondering. The below images are the visual depictions of their sometimes funny, deep, tragic and nostalgic memories. The stories that accompany them are moving and insightful. Art takes courage. It is in our own searching that we can really find our creative verve which allows us to develop our personal voice. Enjoy the vast variety of work !

Surreal Stillife
Students in level 3 were asked to draw a still life based on observation and then they were introduced to the Art movement Surrealism. Surrealism , a 20th century avant-garde movement in art which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example the irrational juxtaposition of images. A simple definition of this movement is putting realistic imagery in an unusual or unexpected environment;oftentimes our dreams and nightmares are used as metaphors to describe a surrealistic work of art. the movement also ran parallel to a growing interest and study in human psychology. Below is the results of their imaginings.
Play is defined as engaging in an activity for pure enjoyment and or amusement; that said in an art room, play leads to discovery and the acquisition of new methods. These small vignettes are the results of students playing with acrylic painting techniques and mixing media. Students are given brief demonstrations and then are released to discover and devise their “own” playgrounds. Some of the materials that the students used were white & black glue, modeling paste, gesso and color sticks. They explored brushstroke techniques like Scumbling and Pointillism. These activities fill the artist’s toolbox with more knowledge and insights into their own work-which in turn allows more personal choice and freedom in developing their own personal style. Below are clips of their "play" time.

Statuesque
Imposing. Striking. Stately. Majestic. Noble. Magnificent. Splendid. Impressive. Regal...
Level 3 students were asked to research a statue and place it into an environment. They could add the unexpected, they could modernize it and they could mix media. Below are some examples of their "Statuesque" compositions.
Spring 2018 DAM ART!
In March 2018 EHS Visual Arts & AP Art History students went on a field trip to the Denver Art Museum (DAM).
Level 3 Drawing/Painting Students were asked to find at least 4 pieces of art that resonated with them. After they documented and sketched their chosen sections they were asked to create an original piece through combining, editing and or reworking the parts that they responded to.
Here are some examples of the resultant work of the DAM Art Project!

Level 3 students were give still life stations to observe. They then selected areas that they wanted to focus on, next they were given choices as to how to set up their compositions. Some artists chose to do a collage of 3 sections and in each section the media changed. Others chose to work with one media, while a few others combined in a more straight forward approach. Below are examples of their outstanding efforts.

Level 3 students are preparing for a choice Stillife unit and thus they were given 3 small Start problems for practicing with different media and on different surfaces to better inform them about what media they may want to pursue for a final longer more involved project. Below are some examples of their STARTS. We learn when we play; when a student has very specific objectives and guidelines they tend to stiffen up, but when we are given permission to have fun, experiment and play we relax and in that "let go" we learn and grow artistically. The art pictured is done with paper towels, newspaper, caran'dache, charcoal, watercolor and or colored pencil

"JUST TAKE THEM 'OLE RECORDS OFF THE SHELF..."
Students in level 3 were asked to research a "Classic" Rock N Roll band from the 60's, 70's 80's or 90's and then literally illustrate the band's name. They were creating a Illustrative Visual pun. Below are some of the finished pieces! The class then created a mixed CD with a song from each of the represented groups!! This was a great unit with some clever ideas!!
One of my favorite assignments is the "Surface" Painting. Students are asked to dissect an image through 3 processes,
Observation, Interpretation and Editing. All 3 different acts and yet linked simultaneously when one does art. Below are some student examples of these technical watercolors. The student first does a "layered and puzzled" drawing; carefully documenting all layers of values and surface effects. NO GRID is ever USED! Once the drawing is complete they transfer the outlined drawing onto good quality watercolor paper and begin their painting. Some general strategies that are often used with watercolor are light to dark, general to specific, broad to detail , colors are layered and built through lightness of value. Students usually find a tremendous amount of success in this unit. They achieve the capability of illustrating unique surface challenges which in turn gives them insight and tools for how to visually solve these quandaries in future artistic endeavors !

2016- Fall Surface Paintings
THE BONE YARD- 2016
Most artists have lots of random, fun and unusual objects in their studios. I am no exception and have a vast collection of animal bones and skulls. This year the level 3 students worked on Gessoed paper and created life drawings of bones and then set up a stillife that they liked. The paintings were based on their stillife drawings. They were asked to focus on texture and value, but were give artistic liscense to make them authentically their own interpretations. These are acrylic paintings. Some students went a step further and added some unexpected surprises.
The images below are results of a "Trompe'Loeil" extension assignment. Students chose small black and white
"microscopic" images from an old science and nature book. They broke their surface into 3-5 geometric constructs and then glued the cut-outs down. After which they began to intuitively extend the designs with the purpose of visual concealment. They worked with black & white acrylic and practiced using matte medium to aid in the blending. This was also continued practice in value skills.

Texturettes
These are small 8 x 8 texture studies done on top of homemade modeling paste; made with Baking Soda & Elmers glue. After they got the consistency that they wanted they drew their images and finished with watercolor.

Spring, 2015
The Pastel Paintings below are from Spring 2015. The level 3 students were asked to focus on scattering geometric form with the intent of creating layers and a feeling of imagery that has been piled together. In addition they practiced developing the illusion of form through light & shadow or VALUE. We looked at the work of contemporary artist Mix Lang as inspiration for the style and approach. Although all of the work was developed with "project" restraints, all student artists managed to come up with compositions that are unique and implore personal flare.
